It all started with an idea
The history of the PHWT began in 1989, when regional companies from the Oldenburger Münsterland region decided to work together to train young academics through practical courses of study at the highest level. As a first step, they founded the Berufsakademie Oldenburger Münsterland e.V. The association joined forces with the Dr. Jürgen Ulderup Foundation in 1994 with the aim of offering mechanical engineering courses in addition to business administration courses and gaining recognition as a state-recognized university of applied sciences.
In 1998, it was recognized by the state as a university of applied sciences with an integrated university of cooperative education, so that the FHWT was able to offer diploma degrees in addition to the university of cooperative education courses. In 1999, the PHWT opened the locations in Oldenburg (electrical engineering) and Diepholz (mechanical engineering). Motivated by the Bologna Process, the vocational academy courses were phased out and Bachelor’s and Master’s degree courses have been offered instead.
The name was changed from FHWT to PHWT in 2014.
The Center for Materials and Technology and the Center for Mechatronics and Electrical Engineering were established at the Diepholz site. In 2016, the PHWT merged the technical degree programs at the new campus in Diepholz and the Oldenburg site was closed. The expansion of the campus in Diepholz was completed in March 2022.
PHWT has grown significantly since its foundation and has now built up a valuable network of 200 member companies . This is mainly due to the excellent reputation of PHWT graduates. They take on responsibility early on and thus support the company’s success in the long term. This success is based on the special teaching concept of community, individual support, state-of-the-art content and long-term practical orientation.
